Zhong Kui, also known as chungkuel or kueihsing, is a figure in Chinese mythology. He is said to be a powerful demon hunter and protector of the home. In art, he is often depicted as a fierce-looking man with a brush (symbolizing his power over evil spirits) and a scroll (symbolizing his scholarly accomplishments). He is also considered as a lucky charm of good fortune, wealth and is said to keep evil spirits away, thus a common decoration in many homes during the festivals such as new year.
